Imusa 4-1/4-Quart Aluminum Pressure Cooker Review

Imusa 4-1/4-Quart Aluminum Pressure Cooker
Average Reviews:

I love this thing! I absolutely love it. It's heavy-duty yet lightweight, beautifully polished, has ample capacity, and with all the safety features very welcome in my kitchen. I do have one beef with it, but I consider it minor. I'll cover that problem at the bottom.
Because of the straight sides and slightly rounded bottom I get ample heat absorption through the vessel. It heats completely with two pounds of food in it in less than ten minutes and continues to cook at a very low (I use gas) simmer setting after that. With the additional safety releases I really don't worry about using it either. And it cleans up beautifully.
The weighted pressure relief valve tells me exactly when to turn the heat down and reminds me that it's cooking. It's such a simple and straightforward design that I really can't say much more about it. To date the two "stews" I've cooked in it were tender, delectable, and addicting.
My only complaint is that the "interlock" on the handle sometimes gets stuck in the locked or unlocked position. This causes me to have to "jiggle" the lock a bit to get the interlock to work. If it's not sealing right I don't get a pressure build-up. If doesn't drop down after pressure release I can't get the pot open. Again, this is minor because jiggling the handle will get the interlock to behave.

I bought this set because I did not know if I wanted a 4 quart or 6 quart pressure cooker, this set solved my problem. When I got this set I was impressed with the quality as it was heavy SS inside and out. My pressure cooker set had only two settings, one for 15 psi and another for 8.5 psi, not three that this listing said. I also ordered the steam basket and trivet ($20), extra gasket ($12), and a SS top ($20) for either base from Magefesausa.com who told me that their pressure cookers only have the two pressure settings and that description of 3 settings was in error.

This pressure cooker is amazing. Purchased it because it's failproof as far as it blowing up like the old style cookers. You can't get the lid off until the steam has dissipated. The meals are quick and delicious. The good part is that you can remove the nonstick cooking pan to wash it. The bad part is that if you spill something inside the part that heats the pan, it is difficult to clean out. I would still recommend it.

Fagor Duo Stainless-Steel 4-Quart Pressure Cooker Review

Fagor Duo Stainless-Steel 4-Quart Pressure Cooker
Average Reviews:

I LOVE this cooker!!! It saves me time, work, money, nutrients, cooks 3-10 times faster. You can put food in even if not defrosted [although microwaves help that issue]. They make the best stews, soups, sweet and sour ribs, chili, puddings, cheese cakes etc. You can buy a really inexpensive cut of meat, put in your spices, some water and wine, and in less than 20 minutes it is fork tender. Whenever I have a recipe that calls for cooked chicken [like enchiladas], I buy the less expensive whole chicken, put it in the cooker and in 15-20 minutes it is falling-off-the-bone tender.
This one comes with a double locking system and two levels of pressure; one for veggies and grains; the other for more dense foods like dry beans, meats or squash. I would never be without one again. I'm going to order the companion 6 quart that Fagor makes for those larger meats and veggies!

Easy, safe, healthy and time-saving, the pressure cooker is a busy cook's best friend. This cooker allows you to select from two pressure settings without changing valves and it has a visual indicator on the handle to tell you when all pressure has been released. You can cook everyday recipes in 1/3 less time while retaining important water soluble vitamins and minerals. Want some examples? Okay, how about a cup of dried black beans ready in about 15 minutes, or an entire 3 lb. chicken ready in about the same? Risotto, done in 7 minutes or a 2 lb. lobster, cooked in 3?

Fagor Splendid 4-Quart Pressure Cooker Review

Fagor Splendid 4-Quart Pressure Cooker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
1. Cooking with a pressure cooker
Think of a pressure cooker as a crock pot on steroids. The increased pressure inside the sealed vessel results in an elevated boiling point, producing a higher cooking temperature for faster cooking. The standard pressure for these cookers is 15 psi, raising the boiling point from 212f to 250f. Current design features considerably improve the safety of these pots over WWII vintage kitchen bombs.
Pressure cookers are perfect for pot roasts, stews, soups, stocks and long-simmering sauces, reducing cooking times by as much as seventy percent. Beans cook faster in a pressure cooker, although their soaking time is unaffected. Rice will cook faster, too, although the convenience of a dedicated rice cooker is beyond dispute.
Some pressure cookers let users select a second, lower pressure setting (8 psi, bp @ 215f), which yields considerably less accelerated cooking. Why slow down a high-speed cooker? Because some foods, like veggies and fish, cook quickly, and when cooked at 15 psi it is difficult to control doneness. (Recipes for these foods call for running cold water over the pot lid to quickly reduce the pressure and lower the temperature to stop the cooking. For more usual dishes, one would merely turn off the heat and let the cooking coast to a stop.) Pot-count or hubris may move some chefs to use their pressure cookers to prepare delicate foods regardless of the risk of under/over-cooking. The low pressure setting is intended to help these people. For most cooks, foods that cook quickly are better prepared using conventional methods. Arguably, a clever chef could use a pressure cooker as their only pot for all purposes, a desirable feature when living out of a knapsack on a desert isle where time is money or fuel is precious.
For most cooks, a pressure cooker will not be an essential kitchen utensil, but it is desirable for its ability to shorten long simmer times. An eight-quart pot is probably the most versatile size for most users, because the pot can only be filled to half or at most two-thirds capacity. If veggies are to be steamed rather than boiled, you will need a steamer insert. Expect a learning curve as you discover how to operate the pot and adjust cooking times. A pressure cooker should be stored unassembled, and the gasket (about $10) may need to be replaced occasionally. All parts should be hand washed. The the pot and lid are ruined if dinged where the gasket seats.
2. The Fagor Pressure Cooker
Fagor in Spain is like General Dynamics in the US - a huge industrial conglomerate. Their "Commercial" (and similar "Splendid") model pressure cooker has a substantial heft to it and seems ready to withstand the rigors of the kitchen. An aluminum heat dispersion disc, completely encapsulated in stainless steel, is bonded to the bottom of the thick-walled stainless steel pot. The stainless steel lid is similarly substantial, and is polished to a mirror finish. The handles seen sturdy enough, although they are plastic and subject to damage. An order form for replacement parts is provided in the box and parts are available over the Internet (www.fagoramerica.com). An instruction booklet is incluye, imperfectly translated from the Spanish. An 80-page recipe book is also included, with full color photographs of fabulous dishes, several of which cannot be prepared in the cooker(!).
The regulator control dial on this unit has three positions: Pressurized (15 psi), open, and remove valve. The lid has a safety interlock that prevents it from being opened while the pot is pressurized, and a small plastic rod pops up to indicate the interlock is active. (One reviewer suggested this rod indicates the pot has reached 15 psi, but this is not so; you know the pot has reached 15 psi when steam starts to escape from the regulator valve.) Another safety feature is a slot in the lid that allows part of the gasket to blow out if the pot has been over-filled.
I was attracted to this model pressure cooker because it seemed to represent an attractive price-performance point. My experience has confirmed that. The value of a second, low pressure setting is arguable for all but the most dedicated pressure cooker users, and fancy features like a pressure gauge seem minimally useful. If I were to buy another pressure cooker, I would likely select this model again, albeit in an 8-qt version to compliment the 4-qt size that seemed the best size for this bachelor cook.

Kuhn Rikon 3344 7.4-Quart Stainless-Steel Pressure Cooker Review

Kuhn Rikon 3344 7.4-Quart Stainless-Steel Pressure Cooker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My grandmother and my mother both used pressure cookers frequently. When I was younger, one of the first kitchen items I purchased was a pressure cooker of my very own (a Hawkins Futura jiggle-type, which still works perfectly).
Recently, I decided to purchase the 7 liter Kuhn Rikon, primarily because it is larger than my Futura. Some other reviewers have noted that the Kuhn Rikon requires more monitoring than jiggle-type pressure cookers. This is only somewhat true. Jiggle-type pressure cookers release steam throughout the cooking process. This provides confirmation that the cooker is operating through sound. It IS convenient if this is what you are used to. However, these cookers require more liquid to achieve pressure and as a result, certain items can come out more watery than I prefer. You can boil away the excess liquid after releasing pressure, but then you lose some of the time saved.
The Kuhn Rikon uses an advanced enclosed system. As a result, the "sound of pressure", or hiss is missing. A small valve with two red lines provides confirmation that half and full pressure have been achieved. At this point in the cooking process, you must turn down the heat to maintain pressure only; if you leave the heat on high, pressure will continue to rise. Without sound to guide you, one must rely on visual clues. The Kuhn Rikon makes it easy. But, it IS different than listening for the hiss.
The first few times you use the cooker, you will need to determine how far to lower your cooktop temperature to maintain the pressure in the cooker. This does require monitoring and a little guess work. However, once you determine how your cooktop and pressure cooker interact, it is the same every time. From that point on, you simply wait for the red line to appear and turn your cooktop down to your pre-determined setting. Set the timer and you're almost done. Easy. In addition:
1. The enclosed system is virtually silent;
2. The enclosed system allows fast, high temperature cooking without heating up your kitchen;
3. The benefits of a lower liquid requirement to achieve high pressure can not be overstated.
The Kuhn Rikon system is different but produces superior results. For those who possess even a modicum of patience, I highly recommend this pressure cooker.

We purchased this cooker based on the recommendation of a Cooks Illustrated review, and we have not been disappointed at all! The 10qt capacity is just what we need for big soups, and the 2-level pressure system offers good flexibility in terms of cooking times and tenderness. We made a fabulous, tender and juicy braised short rib dish in less than 2 hours from start to table- not a bad deal!
2008 Update: We still use this cooker and are still very happy with it! Just don't overfill or you will be picking herbs out of the pressure spout :-) I have also posted a review on TrustedOnes.com (http://www.trustedones.com/listing/view/bbSzZgRY8r3yXhaocbDfzs)

Kuhn Rikon 6-Piece Duromatic Duo Pressure Cooker Set Review

Kuhn Rikon 6-Piece Duromatic Duo Pressure Cooker Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We tried so many pressure cookers over the years as Indian Cooking demands heavy use of pressure cooking for making lentil soups and curries. We even tried few models from India but none could last more than a few years. Either they have problems with safety valves, handles, or they would become loose too often that requires tightenening of handles. If they last well, they were too bulky and takes almost forever to open and close the lid. Most annoying of all, they all make crazy sound that scares both my kids.
Kuhn Rikon pressure cookers sure have expensive prices but once you see them and feel them, you will find every reason to agree that they are well worth the price. This particular 2 set model is so lovely that my wife decided to get rid of most of her cookware as they both compliment each other so well. They can be used for almost everything we cook for our daily needs. The lids are interchangeable. This makes it so convenient to pressure cook veggies and lentils and then continue to use it with glass lid to make the final curry without having to transfer the cooked veggies and lentils to another cookware to make the curry. You can cook meat much faster and tastier without having to marinate for long.
The small one is so convenient if you have small babies and would like to feed them fresh boiled veggies, rice, or lentils. It saves lot of cooking time and the cook book that comes with it is wonderful. It gives you so many nice and simple receipes for everyone.
Couple of our guests got so impressed with this that they bought it right away from Amazon.com without waiting to get an incredible deal for it in their Amazon.com GoldBox like I did.

Fagor Duo Combi 5-Piece Pressure Cooker Set Review

Fagor Duo Combi 5-Piece Pressure Cooker Set
Average Reviews:

Fagor is the least expensive brand that I am aware of which also has the 'modern' features desirable in pressure cookers. To learn more about pressure cookers and what is desirable go to missvickie.com (a non-commercial site devoted to pressure cooker enthusiasts.) Some of these features deal with safety, e.g. you don't have to worry about plugging the steam escape with Fagor. Fagor cookers also reach a pressure of 15psi (which is important.) Unless a brand advertises that they do reach 15psi, assume that they don't. I suggest getting an extra gasket when you buy the item as you will need one at one point (they don't last forever). I must also compliment the company on its service. I bought this item, and sent in a rebate form (for a free stock pot). They sent me a nice paella pan by mistake. I was satisfied, however I called them to make sure that there was no mistake. They answered the phone right away (without the common maze of annoyingly slow and complex menu options.) The woman I talked to was very personable. This woman checked on what happened, called me back, and told me that they would also send the stock pot to me, and for me to go ahead and keep the paella pan. I will update this if needed as time goes on, as I have more experience using this item.

Fagor Splendid 2-in-1 5 Piece Pressure Cooker Set Review

Fagor Splendid 2-in-1 5 Piece Pressure Cooker Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
.....I am a longtime cook, skilled with old aluminum Presto pressure cookers. I received the Fagor Splendid 2-in-1 cooker as a requested gift about 3 years ago. My biggest complaint after a couple years of use was the fancy V-cross-section gasket, which stopped sealing properly after about a year of use, and is pricey to replace. 2009 update: Fagor has switched to a much longer lasting grey gasket (the early ones were turquoise) that seals better. I bought one a couple of years ago and it is still going strong.
.....I hardly use the shallower pan from this set, but the deep pan is wonderfully useful. It's stainless steel, not aluminum, so I don't worry about aluminum getting into the food. It's got a nice heavy bottom, and so is good for deepfrying and popping popcorn as well as pressure cooking. The tall capacity is nice, I can parboil a whole chicken before roasting it, without clogging the vent.
.....The complex safety features are kinda tricky to wash, but this is definitely a useful pan; it does a great job of hurry-up cooking. I am at a mile altitude, so a pressure cooker really is needed frequently in my kitchen.
.....Happy cooking, friend, I hope this info helps.

It is a good pressure cooker. The only problem which I faced with it was that it is somewhat difficult to fit the lid of the cooker. However once you get to know how to do it, it is not that tough. Also in comparison with other brands, I found the cooker to be a bit small for 2 liters. Other than that it is a very good option for every day use. I am a student and I usually prepare vegetables and rice in it and it does the job pretty well and quickly. It is recommended to use the cooker on a low flame. The packaging of the cooker was also good and it arrived on time. I would recommend this to the people who are looking for a decent pressure cooker in a limited budget for every day usage.

I am a first time user of any type of pressure cooker so was a little afraid of the old stories of pressure cookers. However, that fear is all gone. I had no trouble what so ever following the manual that came with the Presto stainless steel electric Pressure cooker. It is so easy. Just follow the directions. Have cooked several times with it already. Food was great. I have even cooked one of the recipes. The only thing I would suggest is brown your meats in an alternate pan as it does have a tendency to stick to the bottom of the cooker. Bottom line is I would recommend this product. Hawkins Pressure Cooker is really good. I had a "Prestige" earlier in which the washer broke and got misplaced. So, I bought this one. Prestige was leaking out water every time it whistled and made a mess of everything. Hawkins never leaks, when it whistles. And it cooks everything thoroughly. So, it does what it is supposed to do damn well. And that is all that is needed. The only thing about Hawkins that is a little bit of a problem is opening the lid and closing it. It can sometimes be frustratingly difficult to do that. But, this is just a minor trick that you need to get used to. So, everything considered, this is a great pressure cooker.
